POLISH OPTICAL INTERNET – PROGRAMME FOR eSCIENCE
نویسندگان
چکیده
The availability of modern telecommunication and information technologies has a direct influence on the evolution of all aspects of the information society. The needs of science and research community in Poland were the reason for establishing a dedicated programme for the development of the information infrastructure in Poland some years ago. A programme called „The Development of the Information Infrastructure for the Scientific Community in Poland” was prepared and realised by the State Committee for Scientific Research together with the Polish scientific community. As a result of this programme the following infrastructure has been built and is currently operating : * five HPC centres in Warsaw, Cracow, Poznan, Gdansk and Wroclaw, * 21 metropolitan area networks (MAN) based on their own fibre cables with the ATM or/and GbEthernet technology, * broadband research and education network POL-34/622 operated by Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Centre [1], * local area networks in most scientific and academic centres, * access of Polish research and education networks first to the European Network TEN155 and next to GEANT.

This paper gives a brief overview of the diverse field of bioinformatics, identifying research themes. It then introduces the BBSRC funded eScience pilot projects against this overview by presenting their biological aims. Areas of the eScience programme addressed by these projects are identified to determine the contribution they are expected to make to eScience. This covers contributions to th...

In November 2000, the government announced a new eScience initiative in the UK with some £120m funding. In this paper we describe a range of the applications that are now on-going within the e-Science Programme and we detail one of the focuses of the e-Science Core Programme, that of building a UK e-Science Grid. We briefly discuss some of the middleware development activities in the UK and ind...

eScience enhanced science is a new paradigm of scientific work and research. In the humanities, eScience environments can be helpful in establishing new workflows and lifecycles of scientific data. WebLicht is such an eScience environment for linguistic analysis, making linguistic tools and resources available network-wide. Today, most digital language resources and tools (LRT) are available by...
متن کاملLanguage Resources and Chemical Informatics
Chemistry research papers are a primary source of information about chemistry, as in any scientific field. The presentation of the data is, predominantly, unstructured information, and so not immediately susceptible to processes developed within chemical informatics for carrying out chemistry research by information processing techniques. At one level, extracting the relevant information from r...
متن کاملTrust and Security in Virtual Communities Report on First Workshop: The Application-Led Security Agenda for eScience
This report presents a snapshot of the perspectives on security of a number of UK eScience Projects. It arises from a workshop held at the eScience Institute in Edinburgh, as part of a year-long ‘theme’ on Trust and Security in Virtual Communities. We identified several recurring topics which appear to occupy much of the time of those engaged with eScience — and with security in particular. The...
